It is always an honor when women are willing to share their photography journey with me. Even more so, when they are willing to share it with everyone on the blog. Although every mom that wants to learn how to use her camera wants to learn to take better photos of their kids, their photography journey often takes them in different places or unlocks new passion they never knew they had. Today, Katja (a long time client and past workshop attendee) shares her photography journey . On my 30th birthday my family and friends all chipped in to buy my “big” camera, which I had been wanting for soooo long! At the time, I had three boys age 7 and under and my point and shoot digital camera was not keeping up with the pace that those boys were setting - many of my pictures were blurry and dark. My photography immediately improved after I got my DSLR and for a while I was happy, I could take pictures of my sons moving fast on sports and other auto settings and I knew how to turn off my flash for night time pictures (but I never touched the manual- too scary!).
I played around with all of the auto setting for YEARS and they kept me happy for a while, but doubt starting creeping in. I wondered why I couldn’t ever get “the” picture, you know the one...where your kids are smiling their real smiles and the background is all soft and fuzzy and all you see is the inner light of the little one you are photographing….I tried and TRIED, sometimes taking hundreds of pictures during an event or occasion to try to get one really amazing picture. I did succeed some of the time, but photography started to lose some luster for me as I blamed myself for not being able to “figure it out”.
For me, I love to be able to get action shots of my kids as they leap energetically through life, but I also want to get sweet pictures of them during each season and at special events. Being able to capture the genuine boy shining through without worrying about shadows, lighting, weird color tinge, or blurry pictures has changed my life. Now I know it wasn't ME that was failing because I couldn’t figure it out from books, just that I didn’t know the simple changes I could make to improve my pictures so much!
I’ll let you in a little secret...there is no magic in camera settings….the things that you learn in the Photography Workshop with Neyssa are simple, easy to remember and ANYONE can learn them. After taking her class, it is just practice, practice, practice and let me tell you, it is WAY more fun now that I know I can get what I want each time I take my camera out. I hope you take the time to do something special for yourself this year, your pictures will never be the same!
Thank you to Katja for sharing her photography journey. I have loved watching her images transform along with the pride she has when sharing the beautiful images SHE captured of her boys.
If her photography journey has inspired you, there is still time to sign up for my photography workshop THIS Saturday. However, there is only ONE spot left! Email firstname.lastname@example.org with why you have to take the workshop for a $50 off code. Click here to register.
