There are different kinds of photographers, even within the family photographer genre. There is traditionalistic, documentary, lifestyle, styled, the list goes on. I have spent years refining my style of photography, or in other words, the feel of my work. The first step to doing that was letting go of all other styles and realizing that I am a lifestyle photographer and only a lifestyle photographer. Once I let go of trying to shoot everything, and shot what made my own heart happy, I was able to start capturing moments my clients truly love.

But why am I a lifestyle photographer?

I am a lifestyle photographer because they are the type of photos I want of my own family.

It may sound obvious that my style of photography is something I want for my own family, but I feel like it is important to note. When I'm photographing your family, I'm thinking about what I would want as a mother, all those details, connections, feelings wrapped up into a family session, that's what I'm trying to capture. Sure I love a good photo of everyone smiling at the camera, yet there are so many other things I want to remember - so much I want my kids to be able to look back at photos and see.

I want to capture the way your children light up when they look at you.

Right now, you are the center of their universe (or maybe, even now, you can see that shifting). And while that can be exhausting, you want to hold onto this stage as long as possible. That glimmer in his eyes as he looks at his mama, that is what I aim to capture. In this same manner, is is the different dynamics and connections between family members that I want to document. This goes way beyond everyone smiling at the camera, because that smile changes when they are smiling at you.

Details are important to your story.

I am a detail girl. It is the details that make each of us unique. Some of these details are so fleeting, like the way she fits in the crook of your arm as a newborn. While others stick around forever, like that little dimple when he smiles.

The details aren't just physical characteristics either, the way she grabs for your hand for comfort, or the way he grabs your face when he gives you a kiss, those are the details that tell your story now.

The chaos won't last forever.

The phrase "you're going to miss this" often comes to mind when it's a challenging day. And while, in that moment my 3 year old is throwing a tantrum, it offers little console, I know I will, in fact, miss so much of the chaos. When I photograph the emotion, the connection, the details, all of that "chaos" is so beautiful. I want families to be able to look back at their images years down the road, and instantly remember the love, the laughter, the support, the wonderful craziness.

Your story can be told beautifully.

I am a perfectionist at heart. However, striving for that "perfect" shot leaves mom (and everyone involved) stressed and frustrated. Possibly because perfection is unrealistic and leads to a bland sameness. Yet lifestyle photography embraces each individual's personality within your family. It captures the dynamics, the connections, and the details within your family. To me, that leads to a collection of images rich with your unique story. That is what ignites my creative spirit. That is why I am a lifestyle photographer.
