What's in My Camera Bag

One question I get asked often is what lens I used for a particular photo. Another question is what gear I use for my photos. So I thought I would share here what's in my camera bag!

I will start first, with my actual camera bag. A year ago, I decided it was time to get a new camera bag, one that fit my style of photography, one that was durable, and one that didn't scream "I'm a camera bag." I did a TON of research, I asked friends on forums, and I watched videos on people using camera bags to get an idea of which bag to get. (As you can see, I'm super cool in how I use my spare time!) I decided on the Peak Design Everyday Messenger. I am happy to report that my research paid off and I LOVE my camera bag. It is comfortable to shoot with and comfortable for taking around on day trips with the family. It is super durable and I don't have to worry when I set it down on location outside. And I can also say that the customer service at Peak Design is wonderful. They accidentally sent me the 13" size when I ordered the 15" and they were so speedy in making sure I got the right bag.

Okay, onto my gear. What is actually in this camera bag I love? First my camera. I have the Canon Mark iv 5D camera body. I admit that the mirrorless systems have caught my eye, however, my camera is like an extension of my body, I am comfortable with it and it still works wonderfully for me.

I only have 3 lenses in my camera bag. I shoot prime lenses (which means it is a fixed focal length, if I want to get closer or further away I must move my body) only because I love the lower aperture and crisp images they create. My first, and most used for personal and newborn work, is the Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 lens. The following couple images were all taken with my 35mm lens.

The next lens in my bag is my Canon 50mm F1.2 lens. I admit, this lens doesn't get as much work as the other two lenses in my camera bag. However, I've recently been using it more and reminded how much I love this focal length. It's the only lens I use for school portraits, a favorite for trips to the park with the kids, and is a great lens for family portraits. The following few images were all taken using my 50mm lens.

My last, and favorite lens, is my Canon 135mm F2.0 lens. This lens allows me to get back and let moments unfold while providing such beautifully compressed bokeh. Here are a few images taken with the 135mm lens.

Besides a chapstick, extra CF cards and camera battery, that's all I keep in my camera bag! Of course, I have an 85mm lens and maybe a Lensbaby Velvet 85 on my wish list, but I am happy with the gear in my camera bag now.

Happy 1st Birthday Hudson

Happy 1st Birthday Hudson. Sweet baby girl, I have loved getting to be your mommy this past year. You have brought so much to our family. It was a journey bringing you home, but from the moment you arrived, we knew you were worth the wait. Your daddy and I not only loved and adored you from the moment we met you, but your siblings fell in love too. Watching them love on you this past year has been amazing, and watching you as you, too, adored them. It makes my heart swell to think about my three littles. This year you have grown and changed so much. You have pushed the limits, doing everything earlier and faster then your siblings, just trying to keep up with them. I keep saying, "slow down, baby girl" but you insist on growing up. You are the baby of the family, but I can tell that you won't let the "big kids" take advantage of you. You already let them know that you don't like when they take their toys and you hold strong when they try. I know that you will be all right.

Recently, you have become buddies with our puppy. As you two grow together, it will be fun to watch your relationship grow. Although you aren't a fan when he gets excited and tries to jump on you, you do love sharing your meals with him.

I love that your favorite toy is the chuck-it. You loved it so much, it made throwing the ball for Sadie rather difficult. So we got you your own mini version. You carry it around everywhere outside.

I know this next year will bring many more adventures and though I hope it does not go too quickly, I am excited to see your personality come through more and more.

We love you so very much, baby girl. Month 2 - February 365 Photographs

I am two months in and I have a set of February 365 Photographs. There are ten months left in the year (please don't go so quickly 2016), but I am loving those moments captured this past month. I even had an extra day to capture one of my favorite photos of the month. This month I photographed several sibling shots that I feel captures the essence of their friendships right now. What is even more special, is that they love when I show them that they are in the photo for the day.

February 365 Photographs, Lifestyle Photography, Photograph Everyday Moments, Sweet Sibling PhotosI made sure that I got in the frame once this month two. Hudson's nursing days are coming to an end so I wanted to photograph this special time before it was over. Our puppy decided he needed to come visit too. February 365 Photographs, Lifestyle Photography, Photograph Everyday Moments, Mother with baby and puppyI photographed first steps. ...February 365 Photographs, Lifestyle Photography, Photograph Everyday Moments, First Steps Picturepink sunrises, played with shadows, and bright sun. There were, of course, days were inspiration lacked and I was happy just to get a photo done. But I still captured this month with my kids.February 365 Photographs, Lifestyle Photography, Photograph Everyday Moments, Sweet Sibling PhotosHere is a snapshot of my February 365 photographs. I am proud to say, I already have a few of these hanging on my walls for the kids to see.February 365 Photographs, Lifestyle Photography, Photograph Everyday Moments, Sweet Sibling Photos

Month 1 - January 365 Photographs

I am through Month 1, with a complete set of January 365 Photographs. A few weeks ago, I had shared why I started a 365 project. The beginning of this year I would have never guessed the amount of growth and even more, joy, I would gain from doing a 365 project. There are still 11 more months, so I have a ways to go before completing it. I have no way of knowing what the rest of this year will bring, but I do know that I have taken some photos of my children I will forever cherish that I might not have had I not been participating in this project. Sure I've taken a few that aren't great and were just to get a photo in for the day.  But I've captured current favorite photos of my kids.Like this one of Sawyer. The sun had come out while taking the dog outside and I happen to bring my camera. I took this photo of Sawyer in our driveway. January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project, Or when I took my camera to Mighty O Donuts when we made a stop on the way home from picking up the newest member of our clan, Anakin.January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project, Who knew I the sun would pop out while the kids enjoyed playing in the sandbox in January! January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project, Another favorite from this month. She loves to jump on the mini trampoline. January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project, This is an image I would have never thought to take had I not been doing this project. Because this project makes me think about what I want to capture each day, I was reminded at bed time one night how Milo stays up reading his Lego "Constructions" each night by flashlight. This image is not only a favorite of mine, but Milo loves it too. January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project, Or what about when I took my camera to Mod Pizza. I must have looked crazy with three kids and a "big camera" but this is the story of a trip to our favorite dinner trip. January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project, I could continue with more favorites from this month, but instead here's a snapshot of the January 365 Photographs. Thank you to Tricia Ebarvia for sharing your templates for easily sharing 365 by month!January 365 Photographs, Personal Photography Project,
