What is a Fresh 48 Newborn Session?

A Fresh 48 Newborn Session is a photo session that takes place shortly after baby is born, while you are still in the hospital.

But doesn't my hospital have a photographer?

It is true that many hospitals have a photographer that comes to the hospital each day. However, these photographers are rarely professionals, and they are coming on their schedule. I speak from experience when I say the experience with the hospital photographer left me feeling they were rushed. When you book a Fresh 48 session with me, we discuss when is best for me to come, whether that's to be there as siblings meet for the first time, or after you've had a meal. There are no surprises when I will show up. You not only will have a better overall experience but the photos will be higher quality and more meaningful to your family.

What does a Fresh 48 Session capture?

There is nothing quite like those first hours with a new baby. You will be amazed how quickly your baby changes those first weeks. A Fresh 48 Session captures your brand new baby and all of those tiny details found in the hospital. The hospital bands around his tiny ankles, those hospital swaddles, the clear bassinet, and of course, your intense love for this little being you just brought into this world.

Fresh 48 sessions are also the perfect time to capture siblings meeting for the very first time. Having me present to photograph the first meeting means you can enjoy this time together as a family, soaking up your new little one.

Why would I want photos hours after giving birth?

Birth is an amazing process no matter how it happens. However, it can really take it's toll on us. You may be exhausted, uncomfortable, trying to figure out nursing, and even still sporting IVs. Yet you also couldn't be more radiant as you snuggle your sweet new babe. Trust me, plenty of pictures will be taken.

When my first son was born my dad, an excited new grandpa, took plenty of photos with his iPad. Though he had the best of intentions, they were either out of focus, blurry, or made me look awful. And as you know, iPad photo quality isn't great in itself. I had also been so weak and pale that I hardly took any photos myself those first days. I wish I had more photos from those first days.

When you have a Fresh 48 session you can not only rest easy knowing your family will be well documented, but rest assured knowing I will be using light and angles to highlight your love for your child and not those less beautiful postpartum aspects.

What if my baby is in the NICU?

Should your baby need to spend time in the NICU we can still document that part of his story. The session may look a little different, and it may take a little longer, however, I promise you won't regret having photos of that time. I had one client even tell me that she did not plan on a NICU stay, but is so glad that we went ahead with her baby boy's session. Years later and she can look back on how far he has come now.

How long is a Fresh 48 Session?

A Fresh 48 session lasts about 30 minutes. The goal of the Fresh 48 session is to photograph your sweet babe and all his details allowing you time to get back to resting. Of course, should we need to pause for a nurse check up, or any interruptions like that, we are able to do so without leaving you feeling rushed.

What if I want my other kids included in our session?

We can not only have your kids present at your session, but we can plan it so that I arrive before your children. I can document the first time they see their siblings, the first time they hold baby, and your first family plus one photo. You can sit back and take in the moment, leaving the documenting all to me.

What Should I Bring to My Fresh 48 Session?

You do not have to bring anything to your Fresh 48 session. However, you can. Often I will suggest moms pack a neutral nursing tank (black, grey, white) and loose sweater, and leggings in their hospital bag. Of course, you're more than welcome to wear the hospital gown, yet a fresh change of clothes helps you feel refreshed and picture ready.

In the end, a Fresh 48 session is about documenting that fleeting time in the hospital as you are enjoying the first hours with your newest family member. This session allows you to relax while having a professional worry about capturing all of those special details.

When do I book my Fresh 48 Session?

You can book your session anytime during your pregnancy. Typically the end of the second trimester to early third trimester is the best time. Do to the nature of the session I am only able to accept a few per month to ensure I am available when baby comes. Of course, if you are reading this and in labor, contact me and I will do all I can to come for a Fresh 48 session.

Plan your outfits before baby is born.

The first tip I give to expectant moms who book a newborn session with me is to plan their outfits before baby is born. Once that little bundle of joy arrives, you won't want to be running to the store, or digging in the closet for something to wear. And I'm sure you don't want to be sending your husband out shopping for clothes either! By having some things planned in advance, you can focus on snuggling your sweet little baby.

Keep the family outfits clean and classic and comfortable.

A newborn session is about capturing your family with the focus on the newest addition.  You will be snuggled up on the couch and/or the master bed. Of course you want to look nice, however, you want to be comfortable. You just had a baby! This isn't the time for fancy dresses, or bold colors.

Mom, get a grey, white, or black nursing tank and a sweater to go over top. The tank top allows for those beautiful and intimate skin to skin shots, while we can throw the cardigan over for a little more formal shot with the family. Jeans (maternity are still most comfortable) or leggings are perfect pairing, too. You can also wear a soft, casual dress if that's more comfortable, too.

Dads and siblings should dress in neutral colors too. Again, this is the time for the focus to be on baby. Black, grey, white, cream, navy are all great for newborn sessions. Patterns are okay as long a they are simple and not distracting.

Swaddle Baby in a diaper.

Newborns, as adorable as they are, don't do well in "outfits." Now isn't the time to put them in huge dresses or stiff outfits. They just can't hold it up and often get lost in all that material. Newborns are beautiful just as they are, so I suggest stripping them down to just a diaper and swaddling them in a blanket.

If you really want to dress baby, a well fitting onesie or sleeper are ideal for photos. While I'm the mom that sizes up when I buy clothes for my kids, newborn photos is not the time for this. Since babies love to blow out diapers and spit up, having a couple of options allows for back ups, just in case! A few favorite brands for neutral newborn clothes are L'oved Baby and Hanna Anderson.

Have any specialty items ready for your session.

While I do not use any props for my sessions, you may have a special item you want included in your session. If you have a special christening gown or handmade blanket from grandma, by all means, I'd love to include them in a few photos. Families also often like to have something to use as a size marker for their photos, like a special stuffed animal or toy. Again, planning these things in advance means less to worry once that sweet baby arrives!

I'm here to help, just ask.

If you're still unsure, I'm available to help any of the families I photograph.

A Long Awaited Newborn Baby Boy

I first met this family last summer for their maternity session. Everything about their session made my heart sing. The light was AMAZING, and even more, you could just feel the excitement and love radiating from this couple. I knew from the first click of my shutter that these were my people. Even after our time together, we spent another half hour or so just chatting in the parking lot. I could not wait to photographer their baby boy.

Once I heard the wonderful news, their little guy was here, we finalized a date for their in-home newborn session. It was wonderful to see them again, and meet their beautiful little boy. (It's a good thing I was expecting at the time, because he sure left me wanting another baby!).

The morning was spent chatting and photographing them around their home. It was everything my newborn sessions are about - laid back, at baby's pace, and about capturing their love for this new baby. Towards the end of the session, their fur babies (two sweet puppy dogs) came in to snuggle for a few photos.

Again, a big congratulations to this beautiful family for their long awaited baby boy. I am so honored I was able to photograph him.

Not too Late for Newborn Photos

I admit, when families contact me, I usually suggest newborn photos within the first two weeks after birth. Baby is super sleepy and still has all of those tiny newborn details. However, I get it. Life right after having a baby is crazy (which is okay) and maybe you're not ready for newborn photos right away. Time gets away quickly, as days and nights are mixed up from lack of sleep. But it is not too late for newborn photos.

This mama reached out for me to capture her newborn baby boy who was just 2 months old. I was thrilled. This means baby is awake and just might even smile for us. Even more special, this family reminded me what a small world it is. Not only were they referred by two different families I photograph, but it turns out, my daughter went to the same school as their son!

Upon arrival at their home, I was immediately greeted by their sweet dog and even sweeter big kids. They showed me around and we picked out the perfect spot (with best light) for their session. Because we were in their home, everyone was comfortable and the kids were able to come and go as they wanted. I managed to catch them wrestling together on the big bed while I was focusing on their parents with baby brother. I couldn't help but capture those moments of fun play.

Because baby boy was 2 months old, he was awake for much of the session. The connection between everyone in this family was so beautiful. And this sweet baby even took a little cat nap while I continued to photograph him and his tiny details.

I may have overshared a little bit from this session, but I can't help it! There are too many favorites to pick from.

If you're expecting or have had your baby recently, let's talk about your newborn photography session.
